Top Must-See Destinations in Laos: A Traveler’s Guide with Videos

While traveling through Southeast Asia, Laos was a destination I had almost zero expectations for. But in the end, I didn’t want to leave. Those 7 days flew by, and it’s safe to say that Laos really grew on me. While Sri Lanka remains my favorite in this part of the world, Laos comes pretty close.

And yes, you guessed it—I would definitely return. Beyond its breathtaking nature, the kindest people, rich culture, and delicious food, there are countless other reasons to love this country. In this blog post, I will guide you through some of the must-see destinations in Laos.

So, which are the must-see destinations in Laos?

Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang is a charming town located in the northern part of Laos. It’s one of the most delightful towns I’ve visited. From the very first day, I felt a sense of warmth, comfort, and hospitality. By day two, it felt like home. Yes, that’s the perfect word—homely.

Luang Prabang is home to several fascinating destinations. A visit to the TAEC Center (Traditional Arts and Ethnology Center) is a must. This carefully curated center offers an engaging experience, celebrating the ethnic cultures and peoples of Laos. It hosts both permanent and temporary exhibitions, along with events and craft workshops. Attached to the center is a shop where you can purchase items directly linked to the artisan communities that produce them.

Next on the list is the ex Royal Palace, now known as the Luang Prabang National Museum. When the monarchy was overthrown in 1975 by the communists and the royal family was sent to re-education camps, the palace was transformed into a national museum. Visitors can admire priceless artifacts from that era, including opulently decorated rooms, crown jewels, large portraits of the royal family, huge Buddha statues, and beautiful silk gowns. The museum offers an insightful and engaging glimpse into Laos’ history.

I highly recommend visit to Phou Si Mountain. This 100-meter-high hill in the heart of the town offers breathtaking views, especially at sunset. If you’re still captivated by the magic of the sunsets in Laos, this is the perfect spot to take it all in.

Of course, no visit to Luang Prabang would be complete without exploring the night market for dinner, souvenirs, paying respect at the many Wats (Buddhist temples) scattered across the city, or participating in the early morning ritual of giving alms to the Buddhist monks. There’s no shortage of activities in this small, charming town.

Tad-Sae Waterfalls

While not as large as the famous Kuang Si Waterfalls, Tad Sae Waterfalls is equally beautiful and impressive, with the added bonus of being less touristy. Located about an hour away by motorbike from Luang Prabang, it’s an ideal day trip for those wanting to escape the town and immerse themselves in pristine nature while cooling off in the refreshing water.

For us, the journey took a bit longer than expected due to a flat bike tire just before we arrived. Since we left quite late (it barely qualified even as a half-day trip), the flat tire almost made us miss the opening hours. However, luck was on our side, and we managed to get there in time for a quick half-hour swim and a photo session.

Tip for the day: Factor in some buffer time for unforeseen events, and leave earlier to ensure you have enough time to fully enjoy the stunning surroundings.

Pak Ou Caves

Inside Pak Ou Caves on the Mekong River

The Pak Ou Caves, perched above the famous Mekong River, are home to hundreds—if not thousands—of small Buddhist statues in various positions. These statues are spread across two main caves, each offering a unique and serene atmosphere.

The caves are located about 25 km from Luang Prabang and can be reached in two ways: either by boat directly from Luang Prabang along the river, or by road, with a short boat ride to cross the river and reach the caves. The choice is yours, dear reader!

VANG VIENG

Next on my list of must-see destinations in Laos is Vang Vieng, a small, charming town surrounded by stunning natural beauty. I absolutely fell in love with this place—no exaggeration. The town offers a variety of activities, including kayaking, hiking, biking, swimming, paragliding, hot air ballooning, and so much more. I do regret only giving it one day to explore—it definitely deserves at least two!

So, what did we do with the one day we had? We decided to visit a Buddhist cave, cheer on people as they jumped from great heights into a pond, and almost got lost in the cave we explored (without a guide, of course!).

Afterward, we opted for some lighter, more fun activities like jumping into a small pond ourselves to relieve the stress from our unfortunate cave adventure. But more on that in another post… Yup, one day can be quite intense!

Vientiane

One can’t miss the capital, can they? Well, I have to admit, I’m not much of a city person. Besides after Laos, we were heading to Cambodia. And it was so hot! By the time we arrived in Vientiane, our minds were already drifting toward Cambodia. As a result, we didn’t give much thought to Vientiane. Maybe not our best decision, but that’s how it went!

With the one day we had, we decided to rent a bright yellow motorbike and simply cruise around the city, stopping wherever we felt like it and trying to stay cool in the scorching heat. By midday, I was done—I needed a break! The heat was unbearable. But despite the discomfort, the things I did see were impressive, and yes, if I ever return, I’d love to explore more of Vientiane.

Impressions from Vientiane

And that, my dear friends, brings this guide to must-see destinations in Laos to an end. I hope you enjoyed reading it. Perhaps you even found some inspiration for your own travel plans – if you ever find yourself in this beautiful country.

Have you ever been to Vientiane, my dear reader? What did I miss there? Or, if you’ve been to Laos, what should I visit next time? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! If you haven’t been, I’d love to know if these lines have inspired you in any way.
With much love,

My Way To Dhamma Anuradha

Immersed in my thoughts, I only had to deal with sweet worries from now on. I had to book a room in Colombo, reserve a train ticket, find all useful local apps to help me navigate in this country, research how to get a local SIM card, and so on. In a nutshell – I had to deal with all the practicalities.

First Impressions of Dhamma Anuradha

I fell in love. The Center was located in the middle of the jungle with coconut, banana trees, and other profuse greenery everywhere around. Trees were bearing not-yet-ripe fruits, which was a pure delight to observe. Where I come from, trees are pleasing us with all sorts of apples, pears, plums, and cherries.
